DHF TS 013:2021 is the recognised UK Code of Practice for the safe design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and management of automated gates, traffic barriers, industrial doors and garage doors. Issued by the Door & Hardware Federation, it provides a single, up-to-date framework that reflects current safety expectations, legal duties and industry best practice.

The purpose of DHF TS 013:2021 is to reduce the risk of injury, damage and system failure associated with powered and automated systems. Automated gates and doors are classed as machinery and can present serious hazards if they are incorrectly specified, installed or maintained. This Code of Practice establishes clear guidance to ensure systems are safe for users, compliant with legislation, and suitable for their intended environment.

The document is divided into three practical sections, each aimed at a different group of stakeholders.

Part 1 is written for installers and maintenance providers. It sets out best practice for carrying out risk assessments, identifying hazards and applying appropriate safety measures. Key risks include crushing, impact, entrapment, drawing-in, electrical faults and structural failure. The guidance explains how these risks should be controlled using measures such as safety edges, presence detection sensors, force limitation, physical guarding, emergency stop controls and regular inspection schedules.

Part 2 focuses on the legal and standards framework that applies to automated gates and doors in the UK. It explains how health and safety legislation and machinery requirements apply to the supply, installation and ongoing maintenance of powered systems. This section supports companies in demonstrating compliance, competence and due diligence through correct system design, documentation and servicing procedures.

Part 3 is aimed at owners, facilities managers and duty-holders. It highlights their responsibility for ensuring automated gates and doors remain safe throughout their operational life. This includes selecting competent installers, ensuring systems are correctly commissioned, arranging routine maintenance, keeping records, and providing appropriate instruction to users.
